In Surah al-Baqarah (2:186), Allah, Al-Qareeb (The Near, The Close), promises that when we pray and make duas (supplications, invocations) to Him, our Lord is Close to us and will respond. In fact, our Sustainer is closer to us than ourselves. Allah, Al-Hamdulillah (All Praise be to Allah), always responds to al-da’i (the supplicant, the caller) when we call upon Him. This ayat (verse) was revealed when a person asked Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, whether Allah was so near so that they could whisper to Him or so far that they would have to speak loudly to Him. Praying and making duas are ways to become close to our Lord. There is a protocol for making duas to The Most High: Praise Allah, send salutations upon the Prophet and his family, confess your sins and then ask for spiritual and even material needs. We must have true faith, righteous deeds, faithfulness and uprightness and keep our promises to our Creator.
