In Surah Al-Shura (42:23), Allah, Al-Wadud (The Loving and Beloved One), tells Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, to inform the people that he asks for no reward or payment from them except al-muwadata fi al-qur’ba (the love for my near relatives). The Prophet’s near relatives are the Ahlul Bayt (People of the Household). While the Prophet does not expect any recompense or reward for his Prophethood except from Allah, The Glorious, he is instructed to state that the love for his near relatives is an expectation that should be adhered to by all the believers. In fact, this reward will benefit the believers and make our Lord and the Prophet pleased. It is, therefore, incumbent for the believers to love the Prophet’s family.
