In Surah al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah, Al-Sabur (The Patient), adresses the people who have faith and believe (“O you who believe”) in Him to seek His Help through patience (sabr) and prayer (salat). This ayat is a command and is for all times in all situations. “At every moment and in all affairs a mortal is in need of Allah’s help, whether it is something which is inside his free will, because he is not an absolutely independent subject, though he is created free in will; or it is something which is outside of his will.” We are in complete need of Allah and we must constantly ask Him for everything and seek His Help. Those who believe are those who are patient, al-sabirina (the patient ones) and pray to Al-Sabur because we love Him, value the Truth of Islam and bear the hardest trials with constant prayers and patience. Our prayers are our acknowledgment of Allah’s Omnipotence and confidence that He is the All-Merciful, “the Only One who can grant the prayers of the sincere supplicants.” Patience also means being able to perform our responsibilities and duties, including worshipping Allah through salat, fasting, zakat, jihad, etc., obtaining knowledge and ethics and withholding ourselves “from lusts and the fleeting pleasure of committing sins and yielding to low desires. Real Faith can never be mere empty words.” It must express and manifest itself through patience and endurance so that we show our faithfulness to Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala. Allah makes it clear that He is with al-sabiruna. His help, assistance, guidance, success, favours, the protection from pests, the perfection of intentions, as well as His other blessings are showered upon the patient by Him.
