In Surah al-Shams (91:1-2), Allah, Al-Musawwir (The Fashioner, The Designer), swears by al-shams (the sun) and her brightness and al-qamar (the moon) when he follows her, and goes on in the next ayats to swear by the day and the night, the heaven and the earth, the soul and Himself, three times, that the person who is successful purifies their soul and the one who fails buries their soul. This is the largest number of oaths in one place in the Holy Qur’an. Allah’s Subhanahu wa ta’ala oaths or swearings give importance to what is being sworn about or by and to the subject of what the oaths are being sworn about. Certainly the sun and the moon, the great planetary objects which Al-Musawwir swears by in these two ayats are very important creations for human life. In fact, the sun is necessary for all life on earth, providing light, heat, energy, rain, plant life, rivers, wind, energy sources (oil, coal, etc.). The brightness and glory of the sun is called duha and is the early morning hours after sunrise. The moon does indeed follow the sun through the sky, rising after her and setting after her. As well, the moon needs the sun for its light. Otherwise, the moon will not be seen by us in the sky. “It seems that the main purpose [of the connection between the oaths and the soul] is that Allah wants to tell people that everything, either material or spiritual, was made ready for them to enable them to reach their salvation. On the one hand, He made the world illuminated and fruitful with sunshine and moonlight for them to live in, and brought the regularity of day and night into existence on the Earth to make their life calm and useful. On the other hand, He created people with a soul gifted with all applicable talents and merits necessary for this aim, such as: a wakeful conscience and a sense of understanding piety and impiety for paving the way to felicity. Yet, they do not purify their soul, but follow the intrigues of Satan.” From An Enlightening Commentary on the Light of the Holy Qur’an, Vol. 20 @ https://www.al-islam.org/enlightening-commentary-light-holy-quran-vol-20/surah-shams-chapter-91#surah-shams-verses-1-10)
