In Surah Nuh (71:15-18), Allah, Al-Musawwir (The Fashioner, The Designer, The Shaper of Forms and Beauty), provides us the continuation of Prophet Nuh’s (peace be upon him) invitation and warning to his people which began in ayat 2. In these verses, Prophet Nuh asks his people if they do not see how Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala has created the seven heavens in layers and made therein the moon a light and made the sun a lamp. “Tibaq denotes comparison and contrast [and] at times implies being laid on top of something and also harmony and accord between two things…The seven heavens are created one above another” and a tafsir (exegesis) says “that whatever is observed by armed and unarmed eyes concerning the celestial bodies constitutes the first heaven on which six other heavens are created one above the other, defying modern science, though man may be able to discover those surprising and vast realms one after the other in future.” (See also 2:29) Al-Musawwir “has made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a brilliant lamp. It is true that billions of brilliant celestial bodies, far more brilliant than the suns and moon in our solar system exist in the seven heavens, but the latter two are of significance in our life since they give light in the day and at night respectively.” Al-Shams (the sun) is called a siraj (lamp) and al-qamar (the moon) is called a nur (light). The moon reflects the light of the sun which comes from within like a lamp which illuminates whatever it shines on. But the light of the moon comes from without, from the sun. (See also 10:5) Prophet Nuh then tells his people that Allah has caused us to grow as a growth from the Earth. Anbatakum means “to germinate, cause to sprout, make grow, cultivate” and shows that we were created from dust/dirt and our nourishment which we need to grow “comes from the Earth, directly, like vegetables, seeds, and fruit, or indirectly, like meat.” The final ayat 18 in this tapestry is about our Resurrection as Prophet Nuh says that Allah will return us into the Earth and bring us forth out of it “a new bringing forth.” We are made of dust/dirt and will return to it. Then Al-Musawwir will revive us on the Day of Resurrection which is certainly a different and new bringing forth from the Earth. Subhanallah!
