In Surah Al-Nahl (16:36), Allah, Al-Qahhar (The Subduer), positively confirms that certainly a Messenger was sent to every ummah (community). They told the people, “Worship Allah and ij’tanabu al-taghut (shun the powers of tyranny).” Every group of people who has something in common and are unified is called an ummah. Taghut refers to any power that is a tyrant, dictator or despot. They are unruly, disobedient to Allah’s commandments, rebellious and oppressive. This includes shaitan (satan) and all oppressors and tyrants. All the Prophets of Allah, The Everlasting, shunned, avoided, disassociated with, were uncooperative with and even rose up against the taghut. This is Allah’s commandment which must be obeyed.
