In Surah al-Nisa (4:148), Allah, Samian wa Aliman (All-Hearing, All-Knowing), in the first part of this ayat, explains that He does not love the speaking of evil in public, including speaking badly about of others and/or the exposure of others’ vices and disgraceful action through speaking about them. “As Allah Himself is the Concealer of Faults, He does not love that individuals betray secrets and make manifest the vices of people so that they disgrace them.” But in the second part of this ayat, Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala makes an exception and tells us that some affairs that can be spoken of, secrets can be revealed and ill-speaking is allowed. as the authority for such betraying secrets and ill-speaking. The exception is unless one has been oppressed. “Such persons are right to defend themselves against the cruelty of transgressors. They can complain of them, criticize them, blame them, and backbite them. They are also right to continue doing that until they get their right and ward off the transgression.” And then Al-Sami wa Al-Alim, so that people “do not misuse this exception and do not make manifest the vices of people under the pretext that they have been transgressed” [against] and oppressed, reminds us that He is All-Hearing and All-Seeing.
