In Surah al-Baqarah (2:156-157), Allah, Al-Hadi (The Guide), in these two ayats explains which of the Muslims receive the Blessings and Mercy from their Sustainer and are the guided ones. They are the ones when a misfortune strikes them, they say: “Inna illahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” (“Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return.”) The ayat before these two ayats speaks of some of the misfortunes and calamities which Al-Hadi tests us with, including fear, hunger, loss of weath and property, loss of lives and loss of fruits and agricultural products, and even the death of one’s child - the fruit of one’s life. It includes “fear from enemies, economic siege, and” jihad and war. “[The] Divine examinations… are to evoke and train the capacities and abilities of humankind.” These can be viewed as opportunities for growth, especially spiritual growth, inshallah. Those who persevere patiently are given glad tidings and good news, as Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala says in ayat 155. Those who have patience and say “Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return,” surely believe and know that everything is in Allah’s Control and Authority, and they submit to Him, patiently and thankfully. Therefore upon them Allah Himself sends salawat (peace and blessings). Subhanallah! Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: “The person who receives a calamity and thereafter, whenever the one remembers it, utters the phrase ‘Verily we belong to Allah, and certainly unto Him shall we return.’, Allah gives the believer once again the reward of the day when the one received that calamity.” ‘(Even though there has passed a long time after that calamity).” These are they who are near to Al-Hadi and they are al-muh’taduna (the guided ones).
