In Surah al-‘Alaq (96:3-5), Allah, Al-Kareem (The Most Generous), in these ayats, some of the first which were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he is instructed by Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala to Read! Iqra’ means read, recite and proclaim. He had been instructed already in the first ayat to Iqra’. It is said that the first Iqra’ was to himself and this second one is to the people. He is told to Iqra’ in the Name of His Sustainer Who is Al-Kareem and Most Gracious. The next ayat tells the Prophet that Allah taught people the use of al-qalam (the pen), taught people writing and the sciences, knowledge, religion and civilization through books. The next ayat tells the Prophet that Allah taught people what they did not know. Al-Hamdulillah!
