In Surah al-Tawbah (9:119), Allah, Al-Sadiq (The Truthful), speaks to the believers and commands them to be itaqu Allah (conscious of Allah) and to be pious. Also, we should always be with those who are al-sadiqina (the truthful). Being conscious of Allah helps train us to perform our responsibilities and avoid committing sins. As well, we must make friends with people who are truthful and avoid the liars. “Truthfulness (sidq)…means that a statement corresponds to external reality, and a person is described as ‘truthful’ (sadiq) when their words match external reality.” So this also includes their beliefs, actions and their goals. Being with truthful people, accompanying them and being in agreement with them, helps us to progress spiritually by becoming familiar with spiritual and ethical values, thus elevating us to becoming a truthful person, inshallah. Of course, Prophet Muhammad and his family, peace and blessings be upon them all, were the most truthful ones and it is our duty to know and follow them in their beliefs, words, actions and goals. O Allah, help us to be itaqu of You, be pious, become truthful and know and be counted amongst al-sadiqina.
