In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:215), Allah, Al-Malik al-Mulk (The Master of the Kingdom), tells us that surely everything we do that’s good it is known by Allah, Al-Alim (All-Aware, The All-Knowing). This ayat is in reply to Prophet Muhammad’s, peace be upon him and his family, companions’ question about what they should spend. Allah tells the Prophet they should give whatever is good, whether material or spiritual, to their parents, relatives, orphans (sing. yatim), the needy people (sing. miskeen) and travellers, wayfarers and refugees (sing. sabil). Acts of sharing bring about an atmosphere of mutuality, cooperation, compassion, love and kindness in society. So we are instructed to give good things to others, starting with our family, and in turn we will receive goodness back from Allah. The family is mentioned first for several reasons: it is natural to give generously to those we love the most; it strengthens family relationships; “taking care of our own” (giving to our relatives) preserves their dignity; and strong family units make strong communities. Our Lord is also letting us know that whatever good we give, including the amount, the intention and the motivation, is known by Allah who will reward us immensely, so it is not necessary for us to announce the support and charity we give to others. By helping others in need, we end up strengthening our relationship with Allah, also. [This tapestry entailed complicated stitches, thus the higher price.]
