In Surah al-Tawbah (9:18), Allah, Al-Shaheed (The Witness), reveals to us that the only people who should maintain Allah’s masajid (places of prostration, sing. masjid, usually translated as mosque) are those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish salat and give zakat and fear nothing and no one except Allah. Masajid are important centres where Muslims worship and conduct social and political activities. The people who take care of the masajid must be Muslims who are Allah-Conscious and act piously and the khutbahs and programs must be constructive and educative and run with halal money. The custodians of the masajid must ensure that salat is established and zakat and khums are collected. They must be brave so that the masajid become centres of activities against transgressions and oppressions and helping the oppressed and the needy. (An Enlightening Commentary into the Light of the Holy Qur’an) Al-Shaheed witnesses why people build masajid, who runs them, what is taught within them, who attends them, why people attend them and why they don’t, and who takes care of and maintains them. In the previous ayats, Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala says that the polytheists are not allowed to be in charge of the masajid and in the following ayats talks about those who are in charge of Masjid al-Haram, which surrounds the Holy Kabba in Makkah. It is the people then and the people today who believe that simply giving water to the hajjis (pilgrims on Hajj) and taking care of the masjid makes them believers, when in fact they are not. They are not equal to those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and do jihad fi sabil Allah (in the Way of Allah). Those who wrongly hold onto and trick the people into believing that they are Muslims are simply dhalimin (oppressors and unjust wrongdoers). When “tyrants and aggressive rulers and their prayer-leaders are some illiterate coward persons, mosques will naturally remain far off from their main aim which is to be spiritually populated.” (An Enlightening Commentary into the Light of the Holy Qur’an) May Allah hasten the downfall of the tyrants of Ahle Saud and return the Holy Kabba and Masjid al-Haraam into the hands of the righteous Mumineen. May Allah hasten the downfall of the zionist state and liberate Al-Quds, Masjid al-Aqsa and the Holy Sites into the hands of the righteous Mumineen.
