In Surah al-Dhariyat (51:50), Allah, Al-Qahir (The Irresistible), in this ayat, commands us to “flee to Allah.” The command was said by Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. He told the people, “I am to you from Him a nadhir mubin (clear warner).” The Holy Qur’an, the Message, the Arabic Words and Prophet Muhammad are all mentioned in the Book as mubin (clear, plain) and they all “bear witness to the clarity of the Divine Message and Word and the Prophets’ warning.”
Fleeing toward Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala is “fleeing from shadows to light, ignorance to knowledge, anxiety to security, superstitions to truth, discord to unity, polytheism to monotheism, and sin to piety.” It means fearing Allah Almighty. Imam al-Baqir (a.s.) said that the Hajj is “an instance of fleeing toward” Allah.
Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala commands His Messenger to proclaim to the people that Allah has sent him on a mission to warn them against obedience to lustful desires and satanic deceits by the jinn and men that surround their hearts and place them in the multiplicities of the world. Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, tells us that he has come to deliver us from those ruses through enlightenment of how to flee from them so we won’t fall prey to their deception and instead become able to draw a distinction between the path to deliverance and that to error and enable us to rest safety free from the perils.
Allah’s Word “flee” is a metaphorical expression that is interesting and delicate. The word “flee” is usually used when we are “confronted with an awe-inspiring being or incident on the one side and” are “aware of a place of refuge somewhere on the other” side. So we flee from the place of incident and turn toward the safe haven. We are told “to escape polytheism and idolatry” since they are terrible beliefs “and turn to monotheism as a safe haven.” We are told to “escape Divine torment and turn toward His Mercy…escape disobedience to Allah” Subhanahu wa ta’ala “and turn to repentance…escape evils, vices, disbelief, shadows of ignorance, and everlasting torment and find a safe haven in Divine Mercy and everlasting bliss and happiness.” Al-Hamdulillah!
